On April 21, Michigan Sisters in Crime hosted a flash-fiction / write in event. We were excited that all levels of writers were represented, from newbies to published authors.
During the flash-fiction segment, attendees spent ten minutes free writing from a provided writing prompt – a photo. Story sharing followed. Everyone was amazed by the diverse picture interpretations and the really interesting stories that were generated. A really fun exercise!
Next was a write-in where we worked for an undisturbed hour on whatever we chose. Being surrounded by the energy, good will, and companionship of other writers seemed to give our personal muses a little push in the right direction. Then participants volunteered to read what they’d written during the write-in or from another work they’d brought along. After each reading, the author received feedback. Nearly everyone shared their pieces and said they found the critiques valuable.
Based on the event feedback, more write-ins and flash-fiction workshops will be scheduled in the future.
