Michigan Sisters in Crime toured the Wayne County Division I and Division II jails in downtown Detroit. Division I, built in 1929, was designed by the same architect responsible for Alcatraz.
Wayne County operates the largest jail system in the State of Michigan. It includes three major facilities, and has an average daily population of about 2,600 people. The facilities house pretrial and sentenced felons, misdemeanants, ordinance, and civil Friend of the Court violators as well as U.S. Marshal detainees.
